History

The Districts shares its boundaries with Lunglei and Saiha District in the north and south respectively. Lawngtlai District covers an area of 2258 sq.kms with the population of 73,685 ( 2001 Census). The inhabitants of the District are mainly the ethnic groups of tribals like Lai and Chakma, who are among the minor tribal communities of Mizoram. The main occupation is cultivation and the rural population largely depends on agriculture for their subsistence.

Wildlife
Lawngtlai district is situated within the tropical belt. It usually received high annual rainfall during the month from May upto September. In this region the tropical wet evergreen, mixed deciduous forest and wild banana forests are found. The western part of the region Lawngtlaiis covered by a thick virgin forest. Host of skima wallichi, Banyan tree, Gulmohar tree, Gamari, Jarus, Champa and several kinds of bamboos, climbers of different kinds and many kinds of wild fruits are found in this area. Several kinds of plants and herbs which are good for making herbal medicines are also found in.

Weather
Lawngtlai District has moderate climate. Relative humidity is highest during the south-west monsoon when they are about 85%. Heavy rainfall is usually received during the month from May up to September every year. The temperature ranges from 15degree to 25 degree during winter. The average annual rainfall is about 285cm. The hottest period starts from the month of March up to August every year. During the rainy season there is heavy clouded. There is an increase of cloudiness from March onwards. A clear and cool weather starts appearing from the month of September up to January the next year.

Blue Mountain

The Highest peak in Mizoram, The Blue Mountain (Phawngpui) is situated in Chhimtuipui district overlooking the bend of the river Koldyne (Chhimtuipui) close on the state's border with Myanmar. The peak 2,157 metre in height and encircled by bamboo groves at the top where there is a level ground of about 200 hectares, offers a grand view of the height hills and the meandering undulated valleys. The woods around are home to various species of beautiful and rare flora and fauna.

Pukzing Cave

The largest cave in Mizoram, it is situated at Pukzing village near Marpara in the district of Aizawl district (Mamit). Legend has it that cave was carved out of the hills with the help of only a hair pin by a very strong man called Mualzavata

Milu Puk

In the Mizo language, puk means a cave. Situated near Mamte village over 100 kms, from Lunglei town, the Milu Puk, which is a large cave, was found many years ago to contain heaps of human skeleton.

Kungawrhi Puk

Another cave in Aizawl district, it is situated on a hill between Farkawn and Vaphai Villages. According to the folktales, a beautiful young girl by the name of Kungawrhi was abducted and kept confined in the forlorn cave by some evil spirits when she was on her way to her husband's village. Kungawrhi, however, was later rescued by her husband from the prison of the spirits.

Surface
National Highway-54 connects Aizawl with the rest of the country through Silchar. Aizawl is easily accessible from other prime northeastern cities like Shillong (450kms) and Guwahati (506kms, Imphal 374 Kms, Kohima 497 Kms, and Agartala 443 Kms by a good road network.

Train
Mizoram does not have any Railway Station in its boundary. Silchar (Assam) is the nearest railway station, which is 184 Kms from Aizawl. Silchar is serviced by several important trains and is linked to the rest of India with convenient Railway network.

Air
Mizoram has its airport in the capital city of Aizawl. Several domestic airlines operate regular flights to Aizawl from Kolkata, Imphal, Guwahati and other important cities of India.
