Kavaratti is the capital of the Lakshadweep Islands since 1964 with most population. Fifty-two mosques are spread out over the island, among which the most beautiful is Ujra mosque. Water from a well near the mosque is believed to have curative powers. The beautiful calm lagoon forms an ideal spot for water sports and basking on sandy beaches. Kayaks, wind surfers and sailing boats are available on hire. Marine life exhibits can be seen at the marine aquarium, which has excellent collection of specimens. The huge mass of coral atoll formed along the south east of Kalpeni is an interesting sight. It is believed that this mass of coral were formed after a storm in 1847. The Southern most Island among the islands in Lakshadweep and farthest from Kavaratti is Minicoy. Minicoy Island, crescent shaped, stands second in area after Andrott Island. This is the one Island where Mahl language is spoken while all other islands use Malyalam as the spoken language. The island is credited with one of the largest laggon in Lakshdweep. Minicoy is very famous for tuna fishing and an important centre for tuna canning. Factories for tuna canning with ice plants and cold storages are attractive for tourists. Major attractios here are the 300 ft Light house and an old Juma mosque. The Minicoy people are art lovers, many dance forms named Dandi and lava dance are practiced here. These are traditional dances performed during festivals. Tourists are provided with comfortable accommodation facilities.

Agatti Island Beach Resort offers 9 beach huts and 10 detached beach bungalows. They are set back about 50 yards from a sandy bay with dining restaurant. The Jewel of the Lakshadweep, Bangaram Island is an uninhabited haven. Barring the occasional visitor from nearby Agatti where the airport is situated, the only residents are the resort staff.
