History

Redeemed with the power struggle of many rulers, Karnala Fort stands as a specimen of the 13th century constructions. The fort was sparingly used by the Karnala rulers including Angres, Mudhan and Peshwas until 1818, by which time British rulers have taken over the grand old fort under their control.

The Karnala Fort engulf a steep rock in the midst of greenish surroundings and has been a challenge to many adventurous trekkers all through the past and continue to be a great attraction among the fans of trekkers. Bhavani Temple

Bhavani temple, also known as Bhavani Khadageshwar Temple, is located at Devale nearby Karnala. The temple is placed at the peak of the hilly regions. Karnala Bird Sanctuary located at the bottom of the Karnala fort is literally a paradise for bird watchers. The bird sanctuary, established in 1968, is a natural habitat for more than 150 species of resident birds and about 37 species of birds migrating from other areas of the world. The bird lovers can spot various kinds of rare birds including spotted heart wood peckers and ashy minimet. Many species of birds like racket tailed drongo, paradise fly catcher, magpie robin, red vented bulbul, myna and owl are abundantly seen here.

Panavel is a main railway station under the Mumbai railway division, which is at a distance of 10 km from Karnala. Panavel is connected to all Indian cities through Mumbai rail head. Taxi services are available from Panavel to Karnala costing about Rs 200.

Air
Nearest major airport is Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, which is nearly 60 km from Karnala. Mumbai (Bombay) is well connected to all major cities in India and also connected to many cities abroad. Taxi services are the one direct travel possibility from Mumbai to Karnala. It costs about Rs 1200.
